What is Massive MIMO?

Airgain's Massive MIMO System

Massive MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) is a wireless communication technology that uses a large number of antennas at the base station to improve the spectral efficiency and data rates of wireless networks. It is a type of MIMO technology that uses a large number of antennas, typically in the range of hundreds or thousands, to communicate with multiple user devices simultaneously.

In Massive MIMO systems, each MIMO antenna array can transmit and receive multiple data streams to and from multiple user devices simultaneously. The base station uses advanced signal processing algorithms to separate and decode the different data streams from each user device. This allows Massive MIMO systems to significantly increase the capacity and efficiency of wireless networks, enabling higher data rates, reduced latency, and improved spectral efficiency.

One of the key advantages of Massive MIMO is its ability to mitigate interference between different user devices. By using a large number of antennas, Massive MIMO systems can create highly directional beams that can be steered towards specific user devices while minimizing interference with other devices. This allows multiple devices to communicate simultaneously in the same frequency band, increasing network capacity and improving overall network performance.

Massive MIMO technology is being used in 5G networks to deliver higher data rates and improved network performance. It is also being explored for use in other wireless communication systems, such as Wi-Fi and satellite communication.

Airgain Plays Hardball in Massive MIMO Field with Partner, MaxLinear

In conjunction with project partner MaxLinear, Inc. (NASDAQ: MXL), a leading provider of silicon solutions for 5G wireless infrastructure, Airgain has developed a reference design for Massive MIMO Radio Units (RU) with improved spectrum reuse.

The partnership pairs MaxLinear’s MXL1550 8T8R transceiver and innovative AI/ML-powered beam-forming algorithms with Airgain’s latest 64T64R antenna array, in support of a growing global Massive MIMO market estimated to reach US$9.62B by 2026, according to Market Data Forecast.

As enterprise and consumer demand for faster and more reliable wireless service continues to explode, mobile operators must adopt new technologies to meet this ever-growing need. While Massive MIMO radios, which use a much larger number of antennas, have the potential to dramatically increase wireless network capacity, they have yet to realize their full potential. Deployments to date have only shown a fraction of the benefits, causing some in the industry to question their true potential.

The partnership between Airgain and MaxLinear addresses the performance deficits of current radios. The reference design will combine Airgain’s leading edge 5G antenna arrays and other wireless systems with MaxLinear’s highly integrated, power-efficient RAN transceiver silicon to create a radio hardware platform that will showcase innovative new Massive MIMO beam-forming algorithms developed by MaxLinear using AI and ML optimization techniques.

We are excited to partner with Airgain to improve the performance of Massive MIMO radio units,” said Brendan Walsh, MaxLinear’s Vice President, Wireless Infrastructure. “The introduction of this new reference design will enable us to boost the adoption of high performance, next-gen radio units, thereby improving 5G infrastructure.

Massive MIMO technologies have shown significant spectral efficiencies over MIMO systems,” says Dr. Ali Sadri, Chief Technology Officer at Airgain. “By combining the unique expertise of both Airgain and MaxLinear, we believe we can help customers experience the real benefit of Massive MIMO systems. We are thrilled to work with the team at MaxLinear to bring this exciting technology to market.
